Cherokee FFA Ignites the Spirit

Hats off to the Cherokee FFA Chapter for their tremendous service to their community!

Cherokee FFA was one of almost 50 student-based organizations that participated in the Ignite the Spirit program offered by Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation.

“The Cherokee FFA Chapter was delighted to join in on the Ignite the Spirt program from the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation,” said agriculture teacher and Cherokee FFA advisor, Laura Brecht. “Members of the Cherokee FFA Chapter were pleased to participate in such an amazing project and give back to those in need during the holiday season!”

Students created meal bags for 25 families in need within the school district. FFA members went shopping to gather supplies for a holiday meal which included canned corn, green beans, cream of mushroom soup, fruit cocktail, Jell-O, cake mix, stuffing mix, mashed potatoes and crunchy onions. They then constructed the bags and donated everything to the local food bank.

Ignite the Spirit is an extension of the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation’s Operation Christmas Meal program and is aimed at increasing awareness of hunger locally and igniting the spirit of service by giving local student groups the tools—pork!—to help even more families during the holiday season.

As part of the program, FFA chapters and 4-H clubs receive pork loins, event kits and aprons along with a check for $250 to purchase additional food for the meal.

Way to go, Cherokee FFA!
