Haul Out Hunger delivered 84 pork loins to Decatur Co. SCICAP, enough to provide 1,512 protein-packed servings of pork for area families in-need.
"Our focus is getting to the root of the problem. Rather than giving them a handout, we want to give them a step up so they can be successful on their own," said Troy McBroom, director of Decatur Co. SCICAP. "We strive to provide individuals and families with the resources that they need for continuous improvement."
Our truck is now 420 pounds lighter after a quick visit to Leon to fill SCICAP's two freezers to the brim with fresh pork loins! In his role, Troy works to improve the quality of life for Iowans living in Decatur County.
"We offer a variety of services in addition to the food pantry. We have access to programs that offer assistantance with utilities, home insulation and even tire replacements," explained Troy. "If they can't afford food they are probably short on everything else, which is why we try to get to the root of the problem. Are their heating bills exceptionally high? Is a flat tire preventing them from getting to work? Those are the things we try to address to hopefully eliminate future issues."
Troy, who has been in his current role with Decatur County SCICAP for more than 15 years, admits that his job can take a toll, but that it's also very rewarding. "It's awesome to be able to help people and see the positive difference that you're making in their lives. I encourage young people to attend college and help enroll families in other local community support organizations. At the end of the day it's just about helping one another out."
