Igniting the Spirit in Lamoni

Lamoni

“Our students learned how to shop for food on a limited budget and also how to help people in their own community—two very valuable experiences,” said Lacey Whitaker, Lamoni ag instructor and FFA advisor.

Another great Ignite the Spirit partnership between the Lamoni High School FFA group and food classes andLamoni Food Pantry.

The students worked with their local pantry and provided food boxes with a little twist—instead of one big meal they included enough food to stretch over the two-week Christmas break.

The foods class dug in and identified ingredients that could be easily prepared by kids and families over break, then both student groups gathered the food items and assembled the boxes. Oatmeal, macaroni and cheese and granola bars were included for kid-friendly snacks.

The Lamoni Community Food Pantry dropped them off at the homes of families they knew could use a little help this Christmas break.

Ignite the Spirit is an extension of the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation’s Operation Christmas Meal program and is aimed at increasing awareness of hunger locally and igniting the spirit of service by giving local student groups the tools—pork!—to help even more families during the holiday season.

This year, nearly 40 FFA, 4-H and school-based organizations received two cases of pork loins and $250 to prepare a meal for families in need or organize food baskets to distribute.
Great job, Lamoni FFA and food classes!
