Every Friday, food-insecure students Lenox Community Schools and Griswold CSD are sent home with backpacks of nutritious food options for the weekend. Power Snack ham and bread coupons are included in those backpacks and serve as an additional resource to support kids in the community.

“When students are hungry, they can be tired, have a hard time focusing and exhibit behavior issues,” explained Superintendent, David Henrichs. “It’s difficult to place a “value” on just one item such as hunger, but it certainly plays a role.”

Earlier this week, Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen kicked off their two-week journey across Iowa to deliver more than 90,000 Power Snack booklets containing a $5 coupon for a pound of deli ham and $3 coupon for a loaf of whole wheat bread.

As farmers and pork producers, Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation are passionate about assisting hunger-relief efforts in Iowa, particularly those directed towards children.

“What excites me most about this program is that it will help families and their children,” continued Superintendent Henrichs. “Protein is important in the diets of young, development students. It aids in brain development and provides energy.”

On today’s visit, 200 Power Snack booklets and 75 pork sticks were delivered—a contribution valued at $1,600 and enough resources to make 2,400 ham sandwich “Power Snacks”.
