Newell-Fonda School Nurse Cares for Kids in More Ways Than One

This year, the Newell-Fonda Community School District received 1,500 Power Snack deli ham and whole wheat bread coupon booklets and 200 Pork Sticks to help combat childhood hunger.

“The reality is that some of our families have never purchased quality foods like these coupons offer,” said Stacey Tiefenthaler, School Nurse. “Those same families are excited to have an opportunity to incorporate the ham and whole wheat bread into their diets. It was just something they couldn’t justify buying before.”

Four times throughout the school year, qualifying students will receive Power Snack booklets from Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation. Each Protein Power! recipe booklet includes a $5 coupon for deli ham and $3 coupon for whole wheat or whole grain bread. The coupons can be redeemed at any local grocery store and provide enough supplies for each child to make twelve ham sandwiches. Combining the energy and carbohydrates of whole wheat bread with the protein of ham means the children will have made themselves a real Power Snack.

“Protein helps provide long-acting energy for our students’ bodies and especially for their brains,” continued Stacey. “We know that when students are hungry, they have a hard time concentrating. Their behaviors may vary between fatigue and irritability to lack of interest and difficulty focusing. Hunger definitely has a negative impact on their ability to learn.”

While distribution varies by school, most coupons are distributed prior to extended weekends and holiday breaks. Stacey prepares the coupon booklets for kids to take home to their parents.
“Now that we’ve received them for a few years and our families recognized what the coupons are and how they work, everyone is so excited to receive them again,” she said. “They really do make a positive difference in our students and families lives.”
