“Due to the current economic situation and our district’s high number of free and reduced lunches, we are facing a lot of food insecurity,” said Kevin Henrichs, Principal at Eldora-New Providence Elementary.

Even before the cost of living went up, families in our Homegrown Iowa communities were still facing food insecurity. Now with the rise of prices, it is more difficult than ever to supply a healthy, balanced meal for a family.

The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation loves bringing the PowerSnack program to school districts in our communities to provide students and families access to nutritious protein. Ham is packed with vitamins and nutrients to support growth, development and cognitive learning in young children.

ENP Elementary received 600 PowerSnack coupons today and 200 pork snack sticks. Each coupon booklet contains $8 for a pound of deli ham and $3 for a loaf of whole wheat bread. The pork sticks were added to the PowerSnack program a few years ago when we noticed a need for immediate hunger relief throughout the school day.

We hope these coupons curb the issue of food insecurity while students are away from school over weekends and extended holiday breaks.
