“Food insecurity in children is a real factor in our communities and has a direct impact on student learning,” said Scot Aden, Cherokee Schools Principal. “When we have hungry students, it makes learning very difficult and increases negative behavior.”

The Cherokee School District takes their role in meeting students’ individual needs very seriously. Just this year, the district opened a food pantry. They also participate in the Backpack Program, work with the Food Bank of Iowa and most recently, received their Power Snack coupons.

A program of Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation, Power Snack aims to alleviate hunger by providing kids with access to nutritious, high-quality food at home. Now in its seventh year, Power Snack provides deli ham and whole wheat bread coupons to 22,751 students statewide.

“When students come to school hungry, it is hard for them to concentrate,” said Principal Aden. “They lack focus and are agitated, which make it difficult for them to learn.”

720 students in the Cherokee School District will receive Power Snack coupons and new this year, pork sticks—a protein-packed resource for teachers to keep at school and keep hungry students fed.

Each student will receive a coupon booklet four times throughout the school year—a contribution valued at $5,760 and enough resources to make 8,640 ham sandwich “Power Snacks”.

“I believe these Power Snack coupons will be a huge asset for our community and something we can easily incorporate into our Backpack Program,” Aden continued. “The coupons will be a readily available resource for students and their families to use. They will help families not feel different and truly make a difference where it matters most.”
