Our last stop through Grundy County brought us to the Dike-New Hartford School District. Since Power Snack started, 1,849 at-risk students in the community have received deli ham and whole wheat bread coupons—enough resources to make 90,912 ham sandwiches!

Last year, the Foundation added pork sticks to provide a portable, immediate infusion of protein to curb hunger and help children focus on learning, which was met with great enthusiasm.

“We surveyed teachers and administrators who participated in Power Snack™ and made some modifications to the program this year,” said Allyson Ladd, Communications Specialist at Iowa Select Farms. “The teachers spoke of the power of the immediate result of the pork sticks, so we have doubled that donation this year to 20,000 sticks.”

During the 2020-2021 school year, 400 students in the district will receive Power Snack coupons four times. Coupons are typically distributed prior to extended holiday breaks when students go without free and reduced breakfast and lunch meal programs, but each school can choose when and how to distribute the coupons and Pork Sticks to best serve their students.

The coupons can be redeemed anywhere deli ham and whole wheat bread is sold and each booklet provides enough food ingredients to make twelve protein-packed “Power Snacks” at home. So, the coupons donated today are the equivalent of 19,200 ham sandwiches for local students in-need.
