Power Snack Stops in BCLUW School District

"Families and students have expressed being very grateful to have these Power Snacks on weekends, long holiday breaks, and just for a quick snack/meal on the go. We are very lucky to have these as an option to send home to our families and students," said Kristin Houston, Counselor at BCLUW Middle and High School. "It is so important for students to come to school and be able to focus and learn, they can't always accomplish this when all that might be on their mind is how hungry they are."
With 1 in 8 Iowa children facing food insecurity, Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation are fighting back with ham sandwiches, pork sticks and educational resources for teachers. These nutritious, protein-packed goodies are through the Foundation’s Power Snack™ program, which has been helping food-insecure Iowa children for nine years.
Students at BCLUW Community Schools will receive Power Snack coupon booklets from the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation's Power Snack program. Each booklet contains a $5 coupon for deli ham and $3 coupon for a loaf of whole wheat bread. Combining the energy and carbohydrates of whole wheat bread with the protein of ham means the children will have made themselves a real Power Snack.
This year, 76,800 Power Snack coupons and 20,000 Pork Sticks will be distributed at 89 schools across Iowa, BCLUW being just one district of many.
