Our next intern highlight features Lauren, a sow production intern all the way from Emporia, Kansas. In the fall, Lauren will be a senior at Kansas State University where she is majoring in animal science. She hopes to use her studies along with her experiences at Iowa Select to pursue a career in veterinary science.

“I chose this internship after finding a special interest in the swine industry,” said Lauren. “I wanted to gain experience and Iowa Select seemed like a family ready to teach me anything.”

Lauren has approached every experience in her internship with an open mind, ready to learn everything she could from the experience.

“It’s been exciting to learn and perform day one piglet care,” she explained. “I’ve also liked to learn all aspects of piglet and sow care and wellbeing.”

In addition to learning technical skills, Lauren also made strong connections with her on-farm family.

“Lauren has been a great fit on our farm. Lauren is intelligent, enthusiastic, and engaged with her responsibilities at work. She has gained everyone's respect and received all of our knowledge with an open mind. She will truly be missed at the end of the summer by the whole crew,” said her manager, Lance. “Our hope is that after vet school she returns to our family at Iowa Select Farms. I hope her experience has been fulfilling and valuable for her next steps moving forward. It has been a pleasure and honor working with Lauren.”
